This gate was reconstructed using centuries-old Aomori hiba (an evergreen tree in the sypress family). Above the cantral doors are kaerumata (lit. frog leg struts) sculpted with images of kirin, an imaginary beast resembling a lion. These sumptuous sculpted decorations closely follow the originals destroyed by firebombing during World War II.
